Waiting over at Stanford, now Harbaugh can act

David Shaw, who served as Harbaugh's offensive coordinator at Stanford, has been named Stanford head coach, the university announced Thursday morning.With that part of the equation settled, Harbaugh can proceed in finalizing plans for his own staff. Harbaugh targeted Vic Fangio to be his defensive coordinator, Comcast SportsNet reported this week. Fangio was a candidate for the Stanford head-coaching job.

Also, Greg Roman, 38, is a strong candidate to join the 49ers' staff, possibly as offensive coordinator.Update at 10:43 A.M.: CSN's Scott Reiss is reporting Greg Roman and Vic Fangio will not return to Stanford.
Roman spent two seasons with Harbaugh at Stanford. He was the team's assistant head coach, and held responsibilities with the tight ends and offensive tackles. He was also "assistant head coach of the offense." Roman also interviewed for the Stanford head-coaching job.Roman spent 13 NFL seasons with the Panthers, Texans and Ravens in a variety of roles. He coached tight ends (2002-03) and quarterbacks (2004-05) with the Texans, and was offensive line assistant with the Ravens in 2006-07 before joining Harbaugh at Stanford in 2009.MORE 49ERS THURSDAY NEWS: Sources -- Clements won't return under current deal
Harbaugh figures to take a hands-on approach to the 49ers' offense. When asked about his play-calling plans, Harbaugh was vague. He told CSN he planned to call some of the plays.Special-teams coach Brian Polian, who also interviewed at Stanford to replace Harbaugh, could also be considered for a spot on the 49ers' staff. Polian's father is Indianapolis Colts president Bill Polian.Stanford assistant Tim Drevno is also a possibility to join the 49ers' staff as tight ends coach. He met with Harbaugh about a position on the staff this week, CSN reported.Former South Florida coach Jim Leavitt could be joining the Harbaugh's staff, too, according to a radio report out of Florida. The Sacramento Bee reported Leavitt is being considered for the job of 49ers' linebackers coach.
