Gamble promoted to 49ers' personnel director

Feb. 4, 2011MAIOCCO ARCHIVE49ERS PAGE49ERS VIDEOMatt MaioccoCSNBayArea.comIn a move anticipated for nearly a month, the 49ers on Friday announced Tom Gamble's promotion to director of player personnel."We are very fortunate to have a guy with the wide range of experience that Tom possesses," 49ers general manager Trent Baalke said in a statement."He's worked with some of the best in the business throughout his career, and has been around football his entire life. As good as he is at what he does professionally, he's an even better person and a great fit for the 49ers."Comcast SportsNet reported last month Gamble would be promoted to Baalke's former position. The 49ers also plan to hire an experienced NFL executive to serve in a senior football advisor role.Gamble will oversee the 49ers' college and pro personnel departments. He served as 49ers director of pro personnel since 2005. Gamble monitored every NFL roster with an emphasis on scouting talent of upcoming pro free agents, while also maintaining continuous depth of personnel on the 49ers roster.Gamble has a lead role as the 49ers currently prepare for free agency. If the players and owners settle on a new collective bargaining agreement, free agency could begin March 4. The 49ers are planning as if free agency will begin on time, coach Jim Harbaugh said.
After the departure of general manager Scot McCloughan last March, Gamble took on additional responsibilities in college scouting before the draft.
Gamble has worked in the 23 seasons, helping build nine playoff teams with the Indianapolis Colts and Philadelphia Eagles. His father, Harry, served as Eagles general manager and president.Earlier today, the 49ers announced the hirings of tight ends coach Reggie Davis and Peter Hansen as defensive assistantquality control coach. Harbaugh's staff is nearly complete. He said he plans to hire another defensive backs coach to work alongside Ed Donatell.49ers coaching staff
