The San Jose Sharks have acquired defenseman Ian White from the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for one of San Jose's two 2nd round draft picks in 2012.

Earlier Friday, the Sharks announced a trade with the Hurricanes that sent defenseman Derek Joslin to Carolina in exchange for future considerations.

White is likely to be available to play Saturday when the Sharks host Colorado.

I feel like Im coming to one of the best teams in the league, White told the San Jose Mercury News. Whenever you get a fresh start its always nice.

White, drafted in the sixth round of the 2002 NHL Draft by Toronto, has two goals and 14 assists in 55 games with Carolina and Calgary this season.

According to Senior Insider Ray Ratto, Carolina was not exploring a trade of White until 1-2 weeks ago and they looked into sending him to San Jose to avoid trading him to another Eastern Conference rival.

Ratto also reports that Sharks general manager Doug Wilson had White on his radar for some time. White's contract expires at the end of the season, at which point the Sharks could keep him as a defenseman or turn him into a forward.

Hes a good puck-mover, a good first-passer, Wilson told the Mercury News. He plays the point on the power play. Hes very competitive. Hes kind of an over-achiever. We think hes a good player at creating offense, moving pucks and shooting pucks.

Joe Pavelski had good things to say about his new teammate in an interview with NHL Network.

"I think he'll help us out, definitely. He's so solid, and makes a good first pass."

Last season, the Sharks made a trade with Carolina to acquire defenseman Niclas Wallin for 2nd and 5th round draft picks on Feb. 7, 2010.
