OAKLAND -- Warriors owner Joe Lacob is poised to make his first significant moves of the offseason.According to various sources, Lacob will extend general manager Larry Riley's contract and also hire agent Bob Myers to be the Warriors' assistant general manager. Those announcements are likely to come later this week. The San Jose Mercury News first reported that Myers would be hired.Riley became the Warriors general manager in May 2009, under previous owner Chris Cohan. Lacob picked up Riley's 2011-12 team option and also added at least one additional year to the deal.
Myers comes to the Warriors from the Wasserman Media Group, where he worked alongside super-agent Arn Tellem. Myers was at Golden State's season-finale at Oracle Arena on Wednesday, watching the game with Riley in an upstairs suite.Bob has a very good feel for the game with a lot of NBA experience, Portland general manager Rich Cho said. Coming from the agent side and going to the front office side should bode very well for him.
Myers, 36, represents, among others, Warriors forward Dorell Wright, Clippers center DeAndre Jordan, Blazers guard Brandon Roy, Kings guuard Tyreke Evans and Nets center Brook Lopez.Tellem has referred to Myers as his "right-hand man."Myers played at UCLA in the mid-1990s and later earned a law degree from Loyola Law School in Los Angeles. He is expected to be the Warriors' point man for salary cap issues and negotiating contracts, and he will be under Riley.Riley was hired as an assistant coach to Don Nelson in September 2006, then during the organization's fallout with general manager Chris Mullin, was promoted to assistant GM in November 2008.Riley eventually took over for Mullin on May 11, 2009, after Mullin was not retained. On Riley's watch, the Warriors selected Stephen Curry with the No. 7 pick in the 2009 draft and Ekpe Udoh with the No. 6 pick in the 2010 draft. Riley also was responsible for acquiring David Lee for 80 million in a sign-and-trade with the New York Knicks last offseason. Also, Riley traded Corey Maggette to the Milwaukee Bucks for Dan Gadzuric and Charlie Bell last summer, and signed Wright as a free agent to a three-year contract.Since taking over as owner of the Warriors in mid-November, Lacob has spoken positively of Riley. Conventional wisdom had suggested that the low-key Riley is a nice complement to the outspoken and involved Lacob.Warriors' co-owner Peter Guber, who has been a member of the UCLA faculty for more than 30 years, replied: "No comment," when asked if Myers was coming on board.
