49ers' Harbaugh delivers flowers to Mrs. Smith

When the newest addition to the 49ers family arrived a week ago, coach Jim Harbaugh was the most prominent member of the welcoming committee.

Alex Smith's wife, Elizabeth, gave birth last week to the couple's first child. Harbaugh showed up at the hospital with flowers for the new mother, a source told CSN Bay Area. The 49ers confirmed Harbaugh's hospital visit.

The 49ers first asked for approval from the league office to offer face-to-face congratulations, making sure they were in compliance with lockout rules. Harbaugh and the 49ers were given clearance because it was viewed purely as a social visit, a team spokesman said.

Harbaugh visited the Smiths at the hospital, hand delivering a floral arrangement. Several other members of the 49ers' organization reached out to the Smiths to offer congratulations on their baby boy.

Quarterback Alex Smith and Harbaugh have built a good rapport since Harbaugh was hired as 49ers head coach on Jan. 7. Harbaugh has stated he has a strong feeling Smith will re-sign. And Smith, whose contract expired at the end of the 2010 league year, confirmed this week that he intends to remain with the 49ers for at least the coming season.
