SAN FRANCISCO -- Lefthander Josh Outman, who has not pitched in the big leagues since undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2009, will start for the A's Monday at Anaheim, manager Bob Geren said Sunday.

Outman, 26, is 4-1 with a 4.78 ERA in eight starts for Triple-A Sacramento this season. In 37 23 innings, he has struck out 30 batters but walked 27. In 20 big league appearances for the As, 16 starts, Outman is 5-3 with a 3.77 ERA.
He's taking the place in the A's rotation of the injured Brandon McCarthy, who was placed on the disabled list Friday with a stress reaction in his right scapula.
The A's also need a starting pitcher for Tuesday's game against the Angels as Tyson Ross is also on the D.L., with a strained left oblique. Geren said he would make that announcement on Monday, though the front-runner in the clubhouse seems to be Guillermo Moscoso, who is 3-2 with a 4.02 ERA in eight appearances for the River Cats, including seven starts. The right-hander has 43 strikeouts and 13 walks.
