With his single in the eighth inning Thursday, Melky Cabrera tied the San Francisco Giants' franchise record for most hits in a month with 51.Cabrera pulled even with former Giants outfielder Randy Winn, who had 51 hits in Sept. 2005, a day after passing Hall of Famer Willie Mays on the S.F.-era record for most hits in the month of May. The Say Hey Kid had 49 hits in May of 1958.It's great to hear the fans and know they're behind me, Cabrera said Tuesday after breaking Mays record. I'm just grateful for the opportunity. The last player to rack up 50 hits in a single month was Carl Crawford back in 2007 as a member of the Tampa Bay Rays.Entering Wednesdays game, Cabrera held the Major League lead in hits (77) and multi-hit games (25). While Cabrera now owns partial share of the San Francisco franchise record, he wasnt even close to the all-time Giants franchise record of 58, set by Freddie Lindstrom in June of 1929 (monthly hit data only goes back to 1918).The Giants acquired the switch-hitting Cabrera in an offseason trade with the Kansas City Royals in exchange for left-handed pitcher Jonathan Sanchez.
