Defenseman Niclas Wallin, who is no longer under contract with the Sharks, is reportedly leaving the NHL and returning to play in Sweden next season with the club Lule.

Swedish hockey site hockeysverige.se published a story that quoted Wallin as saying he was looking forward to returning home.

"It's a huge honor to the club sees me as a future captain, a role that so many great players have had over the years in Lule Hockey and that would be a new challenge in my future playing career," Wallin was quoted as saying. " After many good years over here who have been very interesting and rewarding for the whole family, so now feels the time is ripe to move home. And home for us has always been Norrbotten."

RATTO: Sharks' margin of error roughly zero

Wallin,a 10-year NHL veteran, has played more than 600 games with Carolina and San Jose. Last season he appeared in 23 games for the Sharks.

"We have for a long time maintained a positive dialogue with Niclas and it's now great to us for the future that we can count him in our team with great players and great development potential that exists in our team to once again be a contender in the Swedish ice hockey," said Lars Bergstrom, Lule sports director, in a statement.
