Lombardi is close friends with 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh. He was a finalist for the 49ers' general manager position in January. The 49ers eventually named Trent Baalke to the post.Cornerback remains the top need for the 49ers, who ranked 24th last season in pass defense. The 49ers informed cornerback Nate Clements on Thursday that he and his scheduled salary cap figure of more than 17 million will be released. The 49ers remain in the market for at least one starting quarterback, and they still have some options. The 49ers could go after Antonio Cromartie, who would not return to the Jets if they are able to acquire Asomugha. Also, the 49ers have been linked to Baltimore free-agent Chris Carr. Richard Marshall (Carolina) and Carlos Rogers (Washington) are among the other top free-agent cornerbacks. There is also a chance that the 49ers could re-sign Clements to a new contract.
