49ers sign third-string QB McCown from UFL

SANTA CLARA -- The 49ers signed veteran Josh McCown as a possible solution to be the team's No. 3 quarterback for the regular season. McCown was on the practice field Wednesday, wearing No. 9.McCown, 32, was the highest-ranked passer in the UFL last season with the Hartford Colonials. He completed 56.4 percent of his passes for 1,468 yards in eight games. He threw 10 touchdowns and eight interceptions.Earlier this week, the 49ers brought in Daunte Culpepper for a workout. Culpepper also played last season in the UFL.
He will compete to become the 49ers' No. 3 quarterback for the regular season behind presumptive starter Alex Smith and rookie Colin Kaepernick.McCown (6-4, 215) was in the NFL for eight seasons, including the first four with the Arizona Cardinals. He started 22 games with the Cardinals, including 13 in 2004. He also played for Detroit, the Raiders and Carolina.McCown completed 57.7 percent of his 1,058 NFL passing attempts with 35 touchdowns and 40 interceptions. His career passer rating is 71.3. In 2009, his last season in the NFL, he completed just one of six attempts with the Panthers.
