Can 49ers' receiver carousel work?

Even with Braylon Edwards expected to miss several weeks after undergoing an arthroscopic procedure to repair a torn meniscus on his right knee, the 49ers do not feel any pressing need to add another wide receiver.

That's because the 49ers have not put four wideouts on the field at the same time this season -- and they probably will not.

Tight end Vernon Davis has played each of the 49ers' 106 plays this season. And running back Frank Gore has played all but seven offensive snaps -- with Kendall Hunter and Anthony Dixon on the field for the other plays.

With Edwards out of action for all but the first three plays Sunday against the Cowboys, the 49ers went with Josh Morgan and Ted Ginn in their base offense.
Kyle Williams entered when the 49ers went with three receivers.

Michael Crabtree is expected to return this week, so that will give the 49ers their four active receivers on Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals.

As for Edwards . . . his injury is a significant blow. He signed a one-year contract that included a 1 million base salary. His contract counts 2.1 million against the salary cap, and he would receive 3.5 million if he catches 90 passes and makes the Pro Bowl.

Last week, Edwards filed a 14 million slander lawsuit, claiming allegations he was directly involved in a fight at a suburban Detroit restaurant that cost him a 15 million guaranteed contract with another NFL team.

The suit alleges that the unspecified NFL team rescinded the contract offer, and he was forced instead to accept the one-year contract with the 49ers.
