The NFL is stricken with grief after Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher took his life in front of team staff members, and the life of his girlfriend, with whom he had a three-month-old daughter.

Belcher, 25, shot his girlfriend multiple times with his mother present, according to the Kansas City Star. He then left the scene and headed for the Chiefs practice facility at Arrowhead, where Chiefs GM Scott Pioli, head coach Romeo Crennel and other staff members attempted to calm the 6-foot-2, 228-pound linebacker. He shot himself in the head when police arrived.

The Oakland Raiders issued the following statement:"The Oakland Raiders are empathizing with the Chiefs organization. Our hearts are wounded by such an unimaginable tragedy in our NFL family. We will continue to pray for everyone involved."
