YSTL: Successful '14 season more important to Harbaugh or Kap?
Programming note: Watch Yahoo SportsTalk Live tonight at 5:00 and 11:00 on Comcast SportsNet Bay Area.
Jim Harbaugh has two years left on his original 5-year, $25 million deal, but it has become quite clear in the last week that his future with the 49ers is uncertain.
Colin Kaepernick is eligible for a massive extension this offseason, and his representation and the 49ers have reportedly opened contract negotiations.
Needless to say, the 2014 season is an important one for both Harbaugh and Kaepernick, but who needs a successful campaign more?
On Wednesday's Yahoo SportsTalk Live Blitz, Jim Kozimor asked that very question to the panel:
Haberman: "It's more important to Colin because I think ultimately Jim is going to get paid one way or the other ... He (Colin) is a quarterback and he's gonna get paid, but I think ultimately for Jim Harbaugh, we already know where this is headed, and one way or the other it's headed with him cashing a big-time paycheck. Kaepernick still has something to prove."
Ratto: "I'll say Harbaugh because nothing drives him more than the mania of competition. And I think he wants to be able to present Jed York with a Super Bowl ring as an ultimatum. I think that fascinates him more than anything else and I think he wants to be able to prove to Jed York if nobody else that he is indispensable the way he is."
Kawakami: "I think Jim Harbaugh loves this ... He's gonna flourish in this and it's all on the line for him. His career in the NFL might be decided as a great, great, great, epic coach if he can win a Super Bowl this year. Perfect for him..."
