SANTA CLARA – Nose tackle Glenn Dorsey does not appear likely to play Sunday due to a hamstring strain.

Meanwhile, Ray McDonald (biceps) and Justin Smith (shoulder) sat out of practice Wednesday with ailments that are not expected to keep them sidelined against the Tennessee Titans.

The 49ers compensated for those absences with rookie defensive linemen Tank Carradine and Quinton Dial going through their first full practice on Wednesday. Both players participated on the scout team.

When asked if the team might add a defensive lineman to the 53-man roster in advance of Sunday’s game, 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh answered, “We’ll see as the days go on here, possible.”

There is no telling when Carradine and Dial will be ready to contribute this season. After all, neither player participated in any on-field work during the offseason program or training camp after being draft picks. Carradine is returning a knee injury in November that ended his final season at Florida State. Dial underwent toe surgery in January.

“This is much like their first day in football,” Harbaugh said. “And, I’m sure that there’s some gravel in the gut there and some anticipation, excitement, nerves, all those things.”

“So, (we are) working with them to get them acclimated back into playing 11-on-11 football.”

The most likely candidate to be added to the roster to participate in a game is undrafted rookie nose tackle Mike Purcell, who was among the 49ers’ final cuts and has spent the first part of the season on the practice squad.

Right guard Alex Boone (shoulder) did not take part in Wednesday’s practice, either. He is expected to play in Sunday’s game.
