Tight end Vernon Davis posted a photo on social media Monday of himself with a high-profile free-agent-to-be.

And Davis intimated he was courting the player to sign with the 49ers.

Yes, there is one player out there with ties to Davis who immediately comes to mind. He plays a position of need for the 49ers and everything.

But Davis was not referring to his brother, Indianapolis Colts cornerback Vontae Davis. The picture he placed on Instagram included his arm around Jacksonville Jaguars running back Maurice Jones-Drew, a product of the storied De La Salle High program of Concord.

Davis wrote: “Me and Maurice Jones Drew discussing the FUTURE a few nights ago. #sanfrancisco.”

General manager Trent Baalke intimated the 49ers will not ask running back Frank Gore to take a pay cut this season. Marcus Lattimore, Kendall Hunter, LaMichael James and Jewel Hampton are also on the 49ers’ offseason roster. If the 49ers go after a running back, it figures to be a bigger back for short-yardage situations. Anthony Dixon is a scheduled free agent and his return to the 49ers is in question.

The 49ers will definitely add another running back to their offseason roster. But it does not seem like an immediate fit for the 49ers to add a 29-year-old running back with 1,800 career rushing attempts who does not figure to sign for the league minimum.

Now, if Davis can convince his brother to accept a reduced deal to join him with the 49ers, that’s definitely an option worth pursuing.
