NEW ORLEANS -- The 49ers on Saturday promoted tight end Derek Carrier from the practice squad.

The 49ers had an open roster spot after waiving wide receiver Kyle Williams and cornerback Perrish Cox earlier this week.

Carrier will serve as the No. 3 tight end with Garrett Celek out with a hamstring strain.

Vernon Davis is on pace to play Sunday against the New Orleans Saints after passing a required impact test Friday.

Carrier (6-4, 241) played collegiately at Beloit. Originally signed by Raiders as undrafted rookie, he spent last year on the Philadelphia Eagles' practice squad.
