SAN FRANCISCO – Running back LaMichael James and cornerback Nmamdi Asomugha are healthy but will spend Sunday’s game on the sideline.

James and Asomugha were among the 49ers' seven inactive players against the Arizona Cardinals.

Linebacker Patrick Willis returns to the 49ers’ starting lineup after missing two games with a groin strain.

James has been an insurance policy for the 49ers since his arrival last season as a second-round draft pick. With Kendall Hunter filling the same role as James, the 49ers have determined that James has no role in the team’s offense.

Last season, James did not suit up for any games until Hunter was lost for the season with a torn Achilles. In two games this season, James has seven rushing attempts for 31 yards.

Asomugha does not figure to be active for the 49ers, as long as Tramaine Brock remains as the team’s No. 3 cornerback. Brock will remain in that role after capitalizing the opportunity after Asomugha was out of the lineup with a knee injury.
