49ers injury report: Davis out, Staley questionable vs Giants

Tight end Vernon Davis, who went through limited work during all three days of practice this week, was surprisingly ruled out of the 49ers’ game Sunday against the New York Giants due to a left knee injury. Davis will miss a second consecutive game due to the injury.

Coach Jim Tomsula said earlier in the week that Davis had a knee contusion. There is no structural damage to the knee, Tomsula said.

In three games this season, Davis has nine receptions for 109 yards. He has not scored a touchdown since the 2014 season opener against the Dallas Cowboys.

Left tackle Joe Staley returned to limited work on Friday, before the team departed for New Jersey. Staley, who missed two days of practices with a knee injury, is listed as questionable for the game and is expected to play.

Wide receiver Quinton Patton continues to advance through the NFL’s concussion protocol. Unless he experiences a setback, Patton is expected to play against the Giants.

Linebacker Ahmad Brooks is listed as doubtful for the game. Brooks’ agent, Gregory R. Williams, told CSNBayArea.com this week that Brooks is with his family in Louisiana and will not travel to the game after the death of his older sister.

The Giants will not have the services of wide receiver Victor Cruz, who has missed every game this season with a calf injury, as well as starting defensive end Robert Ayers (hamstring) and strong side linebacker Devon Kennard (hamstring).
