SANTA CLARA -- Rookie free safety Eric Reid underwent “contact simulation” after practice Friday, the final step before he can receive clearance to play after sustaining a concussion Sunday night.

“It went well,” Reid told CSNBayArea.com.

Reid said he has experienced no post-concussion symptoms since sitting out the second half of the 49ers’ 29-3 loss to the Seattle Seahawks after his big hit against wide receiver Sidney Rice. He is on pace to play Sunday against the Indianapolis Colts after going through the NFL-mandated concussion protocol.

“I have to check back tomorrow,” Reid said. “So it’s just a waiting game.”

Coach Jim Harbaugh said if Reid’s final test goes well Saturday, he will be cleared to play against the Colts at Candlestick Park.

The final step in the league's concussion protocol is taking part in light contact, such as padded hitting or simulating press coverage.

Meanwhile, defensive tackle Ray McDonald, who is nursing two ankle sprains, was definitive about his status for Sunday’s game. McDonald did not practice on Wednesday and Thursday, but he returned to limited work on Friday.

“I’ll play on Sunday,” McDonald said.

Tight end Vernon Davis (hamstring) did not practice at all this week. He worked with an athletic trainer on a side field while his teammates participated in their final practice of the week. Harbaugh said the decisions on whether to play Davis and McDonald will be made 90 minutes prior to game time when teams are required to submit a list of seven inactive players.
