49ers LB Hodges: Deactivation ‘was coaches' decision'

Linebacker Gerald Hodges, whom the 49ers announced Sunday was deactivated for the game against the Atlanta Falcons for violating team rules, did not offer any explanation or apology on Tuesday.

“It was just the coaches’ decision,” Hodges said. “It was the coaches' decision not to dress me, and I have to go with the coaches’ decision. There’s nothing I can do about it. It’s over with. We’re on to a new week. We’re on to (Rams) game, and I’m ready to go out there and play.”

When asked if his actions warranted an apology to his teammates or the organization, Hodges said, “No, like I said, we’re leaving it in the past and we’re moving on to a new week. And I’m ready to get out there and ball.”

Hodges started the past seven games at inside linebacker. He also started the team’s first three games. With Hodges out of the picture, the 49ers had just two healthy inside linebackers to start the game.

Starter Nick Bellore sustained an elbow injury on the third play of the game and did not return to action. Michael Wilhoite played every snap and was joined by, at various points, safeties Antoine Bethea and Vinnie Sunseri, and outside linebacker Ahmad Brooks.

“Any time I’m never on the field, I feel like it’s hard to watch because I always want to be on the field,” Hodges. “And the guys know that and my coaches know that.”

On Sunday, 49ers coach Chip Kelly declined to reveal the infraction that prompted Hodges' benching.

Hodges said he was told on the day of the game that he would not suit up. When asked if Hodges will be available to play Saturday against the Los Angeles Rams, defensive coordinator Jim O’Neil said, "We’ll see how the week goes.”
