49ers' offense masters of improv

Coming off a game in which the 49ers faced a team that ran a 3-4 defense, offensive coordinator Greg Roman said that the same plan will not apply Thursday night against the Baltimore Ravens.Last week, the 49ers met the Arizona Cardinals. On a short week, the 49ers have to get ready to play against the Ravens' version of a 3-4 defense on Thanksgiving."Two different styles, two different schemes, different personnel," Roman said. "You like to have as much carryover as you can. Some things may fit against this defense, some might not. Definitely, you don't want to overburden the players with too much information in this time frame."I think you start that process when you originally teach what you're teaching in a conceptual fashion so that they can apply principles and not have to learn everything on a short amount of time."
Roman said the 49ers drew up a few plays on the fly Sunday in their 23-7 victory over the Cardinals. Those improvisational skills might come in handy again on Thanksgiving."They (Arizona) did something different so we started running things we hadn't even practiced or talked about practicing," Roman said. "That's when you feel good about where you're going because now you can make adjustments that work, not adjustments that don't work."That's a credit to the players. They did a phenomenal job of picking that up."
