UPDATE (7:30 a.m. Tuesday) -- The 49ers officially announced their one-year contract with running back Alfonso Smith Tuesday morning.

In order to make room on the roster, the team has waived/injured G Fouimalo Fonoti. Fonoti (6-4, 310) signed as an undrafted free agent with the 49ers on May 12, 2014.

The 49ers have reached a contract agreement with free-agent running back Alfonso Smith, according to Smith’s Instagram account.

The 49ers are expected to place running back Kendall Hunter on injured reserve with a torn right ACL, which would open a spot on the 90-man roster for Smith, formerly of the Arizona Cardinals. In addition. LaMichael James is expected to miss a month with a dislocated elbow.
