SANTA CLARA – The 49ers on Tuesday opened the 21-day practice window for rookie cornerback Will Redmond, who was designated for return off injured reserve.

Redmond, a third-round draft pick, was placed on injured reserve on Sept. 5. He saw limited time in the exhibition season as he returned from a torn ACL that ended his college career last season at Mississippi State.

The first game in which Redmond is eligible to play is Week 9, Nov. 6, against the New Orleans Saints. At the end of 21 days, the 49ers must either place Redmond on the 53-man roster or keep him on injured reserve for the remainder of the season.

Redmond is able to practice during the three-week window with a roster exemption.
