SANTA CLARA –- The 49ers placed tight end Garrett Celek on the active physically-unable-to-perform list on Wednesday with an undisclosed physical condition.

Celek, a two-year NFL veteran, will compete for the 49ers’ No. 3 job at tight end behind Vernon Davis and Vance McDonald. Celek caught six passes for 89 yards in 25 games over his first two seasons. The 49ers originally signed Celek in 2012 as an undrafted rookie from Michigan State.

Earlier on Wednesday, the 49ers placed All-Pro linebacker NaVorro Bowman on the PUP list.
