SANTA CLARA -- The 49ers promoted rookie cornerback Darryl Morris to the team's 53-man roster to fill Aldon Smith's roster spot.
The 49ers placed Smith on the reserve/non-football illness list on Monday as he seeks in-patient care for substance abuse. There is no set time that Smith must remain on the NFL list, but he is expected to be out for approximately a month.
Morris, an undrafted rookie from Texas State, was among the 49ers' final cuts before the start of the regular season. The 49ers signed him to the practice squad for the first three weeks of the regular season.
Also, the 49ers signed defensive end D’Aundre Reed (6-foot-4, 260 pounds) to practice squad. Reed played six games for the Minnesota Vikings last season.
