SANTA CLARA – Running back Kendall Hunter will spend the season on the 49ers’ injured reserve list after he cleared waivers on Tuesday.

Hunter sustained a torn ACL in his right knee on July 25 during the 49ers’ second practice of training camp.

In order to create an opening on the team’s 90-man roster at this point of training camp, the 49ers had to expose him on the waiver wire. Because Hunter is not under contract for the 2015 season, there was no reason for another team to claim him.

Hunter will earn his entire salary of $645,000 for the upcoming season from the 49ers. General manager Trent Baalke stated he would like to re-sign Hunter for 2015. He is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent.

Hunter earned the role as Frank Gore’s primary backup during his three seasons with the 49ers after being a fourth-round pick in 2011. In 43 career games, Hunter has 1,202 yards (4.6 average) and seven touchdowns rushing on 262 attempts.
