49ers OLB Ahmad Brooks vs. Washington RT Tyler Polumbus

Tale of the tape
Brooks (55): 6 foot 3, 259 pounds, eighth season, Virginia
Polumbus (74): 6 foot 8, 305 pounds, fifth season, Colorado

Ahmad Brooks was called for the game-changing penalty a week ago in the 49ers’ loss to the New Orleans Saints.

He disagreed with the unnecessary-roughness call against Saints quarterback Drew Brees that wiped out a late-game takeaway in a game the 49ers eventually lost 23-20.

And Brooks disagreed with the subsequent $15,750 fine that NFL’s director of operations, Merton Hanks, handed down. (Brooks is scheduled to appeal the fine on Tuesday.)

But all was not negative, said Brooks, who received offers from former NFL players Ray Lewis and Tedy Bruschi to pay a portion of the fine money. (Brooks has declined to accept their donations.)

“I’m not upset, man,” Brooks said. “Obviously, it’s given me a lot of publicity. It’s not worth $16 grand, but this is the most publicity I ever had off of one play.

Rest assured, Washington right tackle Tyler Polumbus knows all about Brooks.

With Aldon Smith taking on a part-time role in the two games since his return from a voluntary leave of absence, Brooks has clearly established himself as the 49ers’ top pass-rusher. Brooks leads the 49ers with 6.5 sacks – just a half-sack off the career-high he set in 2011.

On Monday, Brooks faces a stiff challenge against Polumbus, who ranks as the No. 3 right tackle in the NFL, according to Pro Football Focus’ grading system. Polumbus has been particularly impressive in pass protection, as he’s surrendered just one sack and six quarterback hits in 10 games.

It’ll be important for Brooks to generate some pressure Monday night on quarterback Robert Griffin while also cutting off any lanes through which he can scramble.

“He’s more of a mobile guy,” Brooks said. “He’s more athletic, obviously. He’s a 4.3 (seconds in the 40-yard dash) speed guy. He’s very accurate in the pocket. Just like Russell Wilson, we’re going to have to play him the same way.”
