SANTA CLARA -- The 49ers hosted free-agent quarterback John Skelton on a workout Tuesday, a league source confirmed.
There was no indication the 49ers planned to sign Skelton. The 49ers are set to open the regular season with veteran Colt McCoy and rookie B.J. Daniels on the 53-man roster behind starting quarterback Colin Kaepernick.
Skelton, who spent his first three NFL seasons with the Arizona Cardinals, was among the final cuts of the Cincinnati Bengals over the weekend. Josh Johnson beat out Skelton for the Bengals' backup job. A year ago, Johnson was released at the end of 49ers training camp.
Skelton completed just 54.2 percent of his passes for the Cardinals last season with two touchdowns and nine interceptions.
