Outside linebacker Aldon Smith, who faces an uncertain future with the 49ers after his latest off-the-field incident, participated in the first day of the team’s voluntary offseason program on Monday in Santa Clara.

Smith’s appearance at the 49ers’ offseason program is notable because of reports and speculation that Smith’s future with the organization is in jeopardy after being arrested last week at Los Angeles International Airport for making a false report of a bomb threat.

If the 49ers had no intention of allowing Smith to play this season, it's questionable whether they would allow him to take part in the team’s offseason program. He is scheduled to make a fully guaranteed $2.336 million in base salary in 2014.

Smith is subject to an NFL suspension for potential violations of the league’s policies on substances of abuse and/or the personal conduct.

As reported earlier in the day, running back LaMichael James was not in attendance. James would welcome a trade for a fresh start, a source said. He has opted to begin his offseason workouts in Texas.

Linebacker NaVorro Bowman and quarterback Colin Kaepernick were among the notable players who participated in the first day of weight training and conditioning. Kaepernick began working out at the team’s facility last week.

The 49ers’ official website, 49ers.com, posted photos from the first day of the offseason program. Smith was not among those pictures, but a source confirmed Smith’s participation.
