SANTA CLARA -- Nnamdi Asomugha will enter the 49ers' season opener on Sunday against the Green Bay Packers as the team's No. 3 cornerback, defensive coordinator Vic Fangio said on Thursday.

Asomugha, a 10-year veteran, has been limited for the past two weeks with a collarbone injury he sustained in the 49ers' third exhibition game on Aug. 25 against the Minnesota Vikings. He did not play last week in the exhibition finale.

"We're confident he'll be able to play on Sunday," Fangio said. "He'll be the No. 3 guy starting the game on Sunday, unless something happens between now and then."

Asomugha won the job to replace Chris Culliver as the team's No. 3 cornerback over Tramaine Brock, who was the front-runner for the job when Chris Culliver was lost for the season with a torn ACL in his left knee. A year ago, Culliver played more than 60 percent of the 49ers' defensive snaps as the third cornerback behind starters Carlos Rogers and Tarell Brown.

Asomugha figures to see a lot of action against Packers wide receiver Jordy Nelson, who caught 49 passes for 745 yards and seven touchdowns in 12 games last season. Culliver saw a lot of action against Nelson last season.

"They caught some balls on him but he played well," Fangio said.

The Packers used four-wideouts sets more against the 49ers last season than they did against any other opponent, Fangio said. However, that could change on Sunday. The Packers last season could line up Nelson, James Jones, Randall Cobb and Greg Jennings. But Jennings signed with the Minnesota Vikings in the offseason as a free agent.
