INDIANAPOLIS -- Outside linebacker Aldon Smith is utilizing the 49ers’ support system in the offseason, 49ers general manager Trent Baalke said on Friday.

Without getting into specifics, Baalke said he has remained in constant communication with Smith since the end of the 49ers’ season.

“I just talked to Aldon yesterday, as a matter of fact,” Baalke said at the NFL Scouting Combine. “He’s in Vail. He’s having a good time away (from football). We keep in contact regularly. And we’ve got a great support system, and Aldon has done an outstanding job of utilizing that support system and will continue to.”

Smith was arrested in September on suspicion of driving under the influence. He took a voluntary leave of absence and missed give games as he sought treatment for substance abuse.
