Buckner issued 49ers' No. 99 — again

Share

The 49ers assigned temporary numbers to their rookie class for the remainder of the offseason program.

The numbers are subject to change, the team announced. However, the 49ers noted that DeForest Buckner will remain No. 99.

Coincidentally, the 49ers had a defensive lineman named Brentson Buckner, who wore No. 99, from 1998 to 2000. Buckner (no relation to DeForest) is now defensive line coach of the Arizona Cardinals.

DeForest Buckner, the 49ers’ top draft pick at No. 7 overall, becomes the first 49ers player since Aldon Smith was released in August to wear the jersey number.

With 90 players under contract and 12 numbers retired, the 49ers always have players on offense and defense wearing duplicate numbers until the final cuts are made.
