Veteran cornerback Carlos Rogers might not be with the 49ers much longer, but the club did not officially release him on Monday, according to the NFL's official transaction wire.

Rogers is expected to be released, according to an ESPN report. He is scheduled to earn $6.6 million in base salary and bonuses in 2014, a figure the 49ers were not willing to pay. The 49ers will clear $5.1 million in salary cap space with his expected release.

The 49ers last offseason approached Rogers about accepting a pay cut. He declined and the move paid off in the short term. The 49ers had no choice but to hold into Rogers after Chris Culliver sustained a season-ending knee injury in training camp.

Culliver and Tramaine Brock are the 49ers' top returning cornerbacks. Tarell Brown is scheduled to hit the free-agent market on Tuesday.

The 49ers have made some phone calls to agents representing cornerbacks. The club has contacted the agent for Miami cornerback Nolan Carroll, a source confirmed.
