The 49ers continue to get their books in order as part of their annual planning for the team’s 90-man offseason roster.
Anquan Boldin, Donte Whitner, Tarell Brown and Phil Dawson are among the scheduled free agents the 49ers would like to retain.
The 49ers will gauge the possibilities of contract extensions with Colin Kaepernick, Aldon Smith, Michael Crabtree, Mike Iupati, Kendall Hunter, Bruce Miller and others whose deals expire after the upcoming season.
And the 49ers must also decide how to deal with big contracts of such veterans as Frank Gore and Carlos Rogers.
One area that the 49ers have under control is the amount of “dead money” that is set to count against the team’s 2014 salary cap. Dead money is term for cap space devoted to players who are no longer on the roster. (It also pertains to remaining prorated signing bonus money for players who were cut and later re-signed.)
Last season, failed first-round draft pick A.J. Jenkins accounted for nearly $900,000 of the team’s salary cap. This year, he is wiped completely off the books due to the trade that sent him to the Kansas City Chiefs last August for Jon Baldwin.
