DeBartolo: Time to extend Harbaugh
TAMPA, Fla. – Former 49ers owner Eddie DeBartolo knows the value of a good coach. And he spoke with his nephew and 49ers CEO Jed York about that subject on Saturday.
DeBartolo, who lives in Tampa, said the 49ers and coach Jim Harbaugh are “well on their way” to getting a contract extension completed.
When asked how important it is for York to lock up Harbaugh to a long-term contract, DeBartolo answered, “I think it’s very important.”
DeBartolo, who plans to attend the 49ers' final game at Candlestick Park next week, spoke to reporters about an hour before the 49ers' game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
“But like all great coaches, you get to a period of time and . . . Bill (Walsh) was that way, even George (Seifert) was that way," DeBartolo said. "They get wound really, really tight. And there is a certain period of time when you get a burn out. Some coaches, it’s earlier. Some coaches, it’s later. And some coaches don’t have it.”
Harbaugh is in the third season of a five-year, $25 million contract. The 49ers plan to negotiate an extension after the season. And DeBartolo said after speaking with York, he believes it will happen.
“I think it’s important that he gets things tied up,” DeBartolo said. “And we talked (Saturday) and I think they’re well on their way of getting it done.”
