Colt McCoy, who was scheduled to earn $1.5 million this season, can still make $1.5 million if he's active for every game of the season.

The 49ers had McCoy rework his contract on Saturday to lower his $1.5 million base salary to the minimum of $630,000, according to a source. McCoy can make up the additional $870,000 through roster bonuses. McCoy will make $54,375 for every game in which he is among the 49ers' 46 active players.

One day after McCoy signed his restructured contract, coach Jim Harbaugh named McCoy as the team's backup quarterback following Sunday's exhibition game against the Minnesota Vikings.

The new contract protects the 49ers from paying the full $1.5 million salary if McCoy does not hold onto the job as Colin Kaepernick's backup for the entire season. Rookie B.J. Daniels and veteran Seneca Wallace are the other quarterbacks on the 49ers' roster entering the final week of the exhibition season. The 49ers released Scott Tolzien on Monday.
