Reserve 49ers running back Anthony Dixon livened up the team’s hottest rivalry with a late-Wednesday night Twitter post in which he referred to their NFC West opponent as the “She-Hawks.”

Dixon deleted the tweet Thursday morning after it had been up for more than 11 hours.

Dixon did not play any offensive snaps in the 49ers’ 34-28 opening-week victory over the Green Bay Packers. He played 23 snaps on special teams.

On Wednesday, players on both sides of the San Francisco-Seattle matchup spoke publicly with respect toward the other team. The 49ers and Seahawks, considered two of the top teams in the NFC, meet for the first time this season on Sunday night in Seattle.

“It’s just a great rivalry,” Seahawks safety Earl Thomas said Wednesday in a conference call with Bay Area reporters. “It’s two great teams, two very alike teams, in the simple fact we’re both physical with great quarterbacks here and there. And both teams have great defenses.”

Dixon’s choice of words provide the first salvo of the week in a rivalry that has heated up since Jim Harbaugh and Pete Carroll, former coaches at Stanford and USC, have carried over their sometimes-contentious competition to the NFL.
