SANTA CLARA – The 49ers had eight players chosen to the Pro Bowl, but only one will be making the trip to Honolulu.

Outside linebacker Ahmad Brooks plans to attend the all-star game, which takes place Sunday. Brooks was chosen to the Pro Bowl for the first time in his eight-year career.

Linebacker NaVorro Bowman and left guard Mike Iupati sustained significant injuries in the 49ers’ loss to the Seattle Seahawks in the NFC Championship game. Bowman tore knee ligaments and will require surgery and a lengthy rehab. Iupati suffered a broken ankle and faces a two-month recovery.

Tackle Joe Staley, running back Frank Gore, defensive lineman Justin Smith and linebacker Patrick Willis have also opted to not attend the game, according to the 49ers. Tight end Vernon Davis told Bay Area News Group he will not attend the Pro Bowl, either.

“That's too soon," Davis said. "I also have nicks and nags that I'm dealing with, and that's another reason."

The NFL has abolished the traditional NFC vs. AFC format. This year, Pro Bowl captains Jerry Rice and Deion Sanders will draft teams on Wednesday.
