Panthers strike first
Panthers wide receiver Russell Shepard streaks past San Francisco's secodary and scores a 40-yard touchdown to give the Panthers a 7-0 lead in the first quarter.
Foster carted off
Reuben Foster, drafted with the No. 31 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft by the 49ers, went down with a right leg injury in the first quarter. The linebacker led the team with three tackles at the time of his injury and was carted into the locker room.
Jaquiski Tartt makes an unbelievable play to intercept Cam Newton just yards away from the end zone in the second quarter. The safety returned it back for 37 yards.
Halftime: Panthers 13, 49ers 0
The 49ers went into the locker room unable to score in the first half. McCaffrey led the Panthers with four receptions and racked up 54 yards of total offense.
Final: Panthers 23, 49ers 3
The 49ers failed to score a touchdown in their season opener and only totaled 217 yards on offense. San Francisco was also penalized 10 times for 74 yards in the loss.
