SANTA CLARA -- Rookie wide receiver Quinton Patton sustained a fractured foot Thursday night against the St. Louis Rams, 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh said.

"He's going to miss some time," Harbaugh said.

It is unknown how long Patton will be out of action, but a fractured metatarsal, which Harbaugh indicated Patton sustained, typically takes from four to six weeks to heal.

Patton will remain on the 49ers' 53-man roster, as the club expects him to be able to return before the end of the season. Each team is allowed to designate one player on injured reserve to return during the season. The 49ers used that designation on rookie linebacker Nick Moody, who is expected to miss seven weeks with a broken hand.

Patton was the 49ers' No. 2 wide receiver early in Thursday's game. Jon Baldwin is a candidate to see more playing time opposite of Anquan Boldin.
