How are Jim Harbaugh, Chip Kelly alike? Eagles TE Ertz explains

Chip Kelly was hired by the Eagles in mid-January 2013.

About three months later, Philadelphia selected Zach Ertz in the second round (35th overall) of the draft.

Did the tight end get along with Kelly?

“It was normal coach-player relationship,” Ertz told Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle. "I don’t need a best friend as a coach. I played for coach Harbaugh. (Kelly is) a great coach. An unbelievable coach.

"I need a coach who’s going to help me maximize my potential. I’ve played with coaches, between coach Harbaugh, (Stanford) coach (David) Shaw and coach Kelly, who have allowed me to do that.”

Ertz is a Bay Area kid who attended Monte Vista High School in Danville.

As a freshman at Stanford in 2010, he played for Jim Harbaugh. David Shaw was his head coach in 2011 and 2012.

Leading up to the 2013 draft, there was speculation that Harbaugh and the 49ers could select Ertz with the 31st overall pick.

Instead, San Francisco traded up to take Eric Reid at No. 18, and traded up again in the second round (from No. 61 to No. 55) to take tight end Vance McDonald.

In 2015, McDonald registered 30 catches for 326 yards and three touchdowns, while Ertz racked up 75 receptions, 853 yards and two scores.

“I don’t need a buddy-buddy as a coach," Ertz said. "I need a guy that’s going to help me maximize my potential, as well as win football games. I think both of those guys did that.”

Any similarites between Kelly and Harbaugh?

“I think their desire to win is very, very similar,” Ertz said. “I did not have a problem with coach Harbaugh. I definitely did not have a problem with coach Kelly. I think, ultimately, as a player, you want to play for a coach that wants to win as much, if not more, than you do.

"I think that’s what the 49ers are getting.”
