Former 49ers receiver Bruce Ellington, who was plagued by injuries in his first three NFL seasons, failed his physical with the New York Jets on Saturday.

The Jets claimed Ellington off waivers after the 49ers cut ties with Ellington on Thursday. The Jets waived him with a failed physical designation upon his completion of an examination.

Ellington spent all of the 2016 season with the 49ers on injured reserve due to a torn hamstring. He missed most of the team’s offseason program with a soft tissue condition. Ellington took part in the 49ers’ first five practices before he was waived.

The 49ers waived Ellington because the club determined he was not going to win a roster spot ahead of slot receivers Jeremy Kerley and rookie Trent Taylor.

Ellington caught 19 passes for 215 yards and two touchdowns in 26 games in 2014 and ’16. He also served as the 49ers’ top return man in his first two seasons. He averaged 25.6 yards on 50 kick returns and 7.7 yards on 42 punt returns.

Ellington was a fourth-round pick (No. 106 overall) of the 49ers in 2014.
