SANTA CLARA – Defensive lineman Justin Smith, who spent most of the season on the 49ers’ injury report with a shoulder injury, is expected to be ready for training camp after sitting out the offseason program.
“He hasn’t been cleared to practice just yet,” 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh said on Wednesday. “He will be (cleared) for training camp.”
Harbaugh intimated that Smith underwent offseason surgery. He did not miss any games last season despite being listed with a shoulder injury for every game from Week 3 until the end of the season.
Smith, a 13-year veteran, has been seen working out in the weight room while his teammates have taken part in practices during the nine-week offseason program.
Smith started all 19 games, including the postseason, last season and recorded 6.5 sacks.
