SAN FRANCISCO -- Colin Kaepernick and the 49ers' first-team offense ended with a flourish Sunday night.

After completing just one of his first seven pass attempts, Kaepernick heated up in leading an 84-yard touchdown drive late in the first quarter against the Minnesota Vikings at Candlestick Park.

Rookie Quinton Patton, a fourth-round pick from Louisiana Tech, played just two snaps on the 11-play drive that took 5 minutes, 38 seconds. And Patton responded with two receptions, including a 5-yard touchdown from Kaepernick.

Patton ran the back line of the end zone with a step on Vikings starting cornerback Josh Robinson. Kaepernick rolled right and threw a perfect pass to Patton for the touchdown.

Patton, who sat out the 49ers' first two exhibition games with a broken finger on his left hand, made his first appearance with the 49ers.

Veteran Kyle Williams did not suit up, as Marlon Moore received his third start of the exhibition season. Moore failed to hang onto a low pass from Kaepernick on the 49ers' second drive. He had back-to-back catches of 15 and 8 yards on the 49ers' scoring drive. Tight end Vernon Davis had catches of 10 and 11 yards.

Kaepernick played the 49ers' first three possessions -- a total of 17 snaps. He completed seven of his 13 pass attempts for 72 yards and a touchdown.

Colt McCoy, who faces an uncertain future with the 49ers, replaced Kaepernick at the start of the second quarter.

Running back Kendall Hunter saw his first action of the exhibition season after returning from a partially torn left Achilles he sustained in late-November. Hunter, the favorite to win the 49ers' backup job, broke off a 15-yard carry on his first touch of the exhibition season.

On defense, veteran Nnamdi Asomugha replaced Tramaine Brock as the 49ers' No. 3 cornerback to open the game. Rookie Eric Reid made his first start at free safety.
