SANTA CLARA -- While Cam Newton was chosen with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2011 draft, Colin Kaepernick had to wait another 24 hours to hear his name called.

“It’s not something I’ll forget,” Kaepernick said Wednesday when asked if it serves as motivation to prove he should’ve been drafted higher.

Kaepernick, whom the 49ers selected with the No. 36 overall pick, will start his fifth playoff game Sunday against Cam Newton’s Panthers. It will be the first postseason start of Newton’s three-year career.

Kaepernick had a miserable game against the Panthers when the clubs met Nov. 10 at Candlestick Park. He completed 11 of 22 pass attempts for a career-low 91 yards with no touchdowns and one interception in the 49ers’ 10-9 loss.

“Didn’t perform well enough,” Kaepernick answered when asked about how he thought he played. “(It was) a variety of things. It really depends on the play, but we have to play better this week.”

Was Kaepernick’s poor production because of his play or the Panthers’ No. 2-ranked defense?

“It was me,” he said.
