SANTA CLARA – Quarterback Colin Kaepernick played 16 snaps, covering two offensive possessions, in the 49ers’ second exhibition game of the summer.
Kaepernick completed 5 of 9 pass attempts for 39 yards as the 49ers opened Levi’s Stadium on Sunday against the Denver Broncos.
The 49ers picked up five first downs while their No. 1 offense was on the field, but did not manage any points. Kicker Phil Dawson missed badly on a 55-yard field goal attempt at the conclusion of the 49ers’ first drive.
Kaepernick’s best pass might have been one that landed incomplete. Kaepernick stood in the pocket a delivered a pass down the field for Brandon Lloyd. But Lloyd, who was covered by Broncos cornerback Aqib Talib, did not fully extend for the pass.
Backup Blaine Gabbert replaced Kaepernick at the beginning of the second quarter.
Running back Frank Gore started and carried twice for 12 yards before getting replaced by rookie Carlos Hyde.
On defense, the 49ers did not start their regular defensive line. Justin Smith, Ian Williams and Ray McDonald returned to practice this week, but they did not suit up for the game.
