At his introductory press conference on Thursday, new 49ers general manager John Lynch was asked how he will make up for personally not having any front office experience.

During his answer, he broke some news.

"I've gotta surround myself with a great team," Lynch said. "I've already done that. Adam Peters has joined us as Vice President of Player Personnel. Adam is an incredibly skilled evalutator of talent.

"Give you a little scoop here. We've also made another hire -- a former teammate of mine and also a former general manager in this league, Martin Mayhew, has joined us a senior personnel executive."

Mayhew and Lynch were teammates in Tampa Bay from 1993 to 1996.

Mayhew was Matt Millen's assistant GM in Detroit, and replaced Millen as Detroit's general manager when Millen was fired in December 2008.

The former cornerback was fired after the Lions got off to a 1-7 start in 2015.

Last year, he served as the New York Giants' Director of Football Operations.

Lynch also used the question as an opportunity to express confidence in himself.

"I know football. I'll put my football acumen up with anyone's," he declared. "I know people and I know how to lead ... I'll learn the rest."
