One potential landing spot for two 49ers assistant coaches was eliminated Thursday morning with Washington’s hiring of Cincinnati offensive coordinator Jay Gruden as head coach.

Washington requested permission from the 49ers to interview offensive coordinator Greg Roman and defensive coordinator Vic Fangio but never had a formal interview with them, a source said.

The Minnesota Vikings have also requested permission to speak with Roman. And the Vikings are also interested in interviewing 49ers defensive line coach Jim Tomsula, per multiple reports. Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer has emerged as a favorite for the Vikings job, ESPN reported.

Roman reportedly interviewed for the Penn State job this week. Vanderbilt coach James Franklin is reportedly on the verge of getting hired for that job, according to multiple reports.
