GLENDALE, Ariz. – The 49ers signed veteran wide receiver Mario Manningham in March 2012 fresh off his key contributions to the New York Giants’ Super Bowl.

But in two seasons with the 49ers, Manningham was not able to provide any postseason contributions. Manningham was placed on injured reserve with a knee injury on Friday.

Quinton Patton, who has just one catch for zero yards in his rookie season, takes over as the 49ers’ No. 3 wide receiver. He’ll play his second consecutive game in that role on Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals.

“You can’t replace Mario,” Patton said. “All you can do is try to pick up some slack.”

Patton played 18 snaps on Monday night in the 49ers’ 34-24 victory over the Atlanta Falcons. He did not see any passes thrown his way in his first game back after exiting the lineup Sept. 26 due to a fractured right foot.

Quarterback Colin Kaepernick has confidence in tight end Vernon Davis and wide receivers Anquan Boldin and Michael Crabtree. Patton will be competing for Kaepernick’s attention.

“It’s getting there,” Patton said of his chemistry with Kaepernick. “I haven’t been out there for a long time, but it’s getting there.

“Be where you’re supposed to be at, catch the ball, and you’ll get some trust. That’s it.”

The 49ers have 52 players on their roster after Manningham was placed on injured reserve, so they had to deactivate only six players to get down to the 46 limit for Sunday’s game. Jon Baldwin, acquired late in the exhibition season from Kansas City in a trade for A.J. Jenkins, is the only 49ers' inactive wide receiver.
