Playing time: D-line rotation meant more rest for J. Smith

Justin Smith played nearly three-quarters of all 49ers defensive snaps in 2013. And that represented a dramatic decrease in playing time from previous seasons.

Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio and defensive line coach Jim Tomsula had better depth on the defensive line, and they used a rotation that featured a lot more of Tony Jerod-Eddie and Demarcus Dobbs to give Smith and Ray McDonald regular breaks throughout games.

In 2012, Smith missed the final 2 ½ games of the regular season with a torn triceps tendon. He still was on the field for a total of 77.4 percent of the 49ers' defensive snaps for the entire season, according to NFLPA documents.

In the recently completed season, Smith did not miss a snap due to injury. Yet, his playing time dropped to 73.3 percent.
